Common eagle ray
Myliobatis aquila
Sighting evidence at El Bajón, Lanzarote
The common eagle ray cruises wall drop-offs and sandy terraces in small groups, using its flattened rostrum to excavate buried bivalves and crustaceans from sediment. It swallows prey whole and grinds them with battery-like pavement teeth before expelling the crushed shell. Encounters at El Bajón tend to occur on the sandy terrace at 12 to 18 m as individuals rest or forage between wall visits.
