The Atlantic trumpetfish is a master of shadow hunting, orienting its elongated body vertically alongside the concrete figures to break its outline and approach prey undetected. It is one of the few examples of a fish using inanimate objects as camouflage scaffolding in a structured and repeatable way. Once within range it extends a protrusible jaw to engulf small fish and crustaceans whole.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
