Eagle ray

Myliobatis aquila

Sighting evidence at Puerto del Carmen Bream Reef

The common eagle ray sweeps through Puerto del Carmen's bream reef during spring and autumn, drawn by the same upwelling pulses that concentrate baitfish. Unlike stingrays it is pelagic in habit, cruising at mid-water with wingbeats rather than resting on the seabed. Schools of up to 20 individuals have been recorded in April and October, looping back and forth across the reef edge in coordinated feeding circuits.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
