Dusky grouper are the dominant apex predators around Meganisi Island, with large individuals occupying territorial boulder overhangs throughout the dive sites. These long-lived fish can exceed 1.5 metres and 60 kilograms, making close encounters here genuinely impressive. As protogynous hermaphrodites, dominant individuals transition from female to male over time, a trait that makes adult males particularly valuable for population health.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
