Mediterranean moray eels are exceptionally abundant around Meganisi's cave systems, where the rocky topography provides ideal den sites at every depth. As ambush predators, they control populations of small fish and crustaceans within the caves and on adjacent reef sections. Their presence in high density is characteristic of rocky Ionian habitats with limited fishing pressure.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
