Common octopus are the star attraction of Sivota Bay night dives, emerging from their dens after dark to hunt crabs, clams, and shrimp across the sandy and rocky bottom. During the day they are detectable by the midden piles of empty shells and crab claws outside their den entrances. Night divers regularly encounter multiple individuals in a single dive, each displaying a different camouflage pattern as they navigate the varied substrate.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
