Pipefish

Syngnathus typhle

Sighting evidence at Sivota Bay, Lefkada

Broadnosed pipefish inhabit the dense seagrass meadows of Sivota Bay, moving with remarkable stealth through the blades where their elongated bodies provide perfect camouflage. Like their seahorse relatives, it is the male that carries developing young in a brood pouch along his abdomen. Their dependence on healthy seagrass makes them sensitive indicators of water quality in the bay.

Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
