The wonderpus is closely related to the mimic octopus but distinguished by its vivid white-and-orange banding that does not change colour for camouflage. Each individual has a unique white spot pattern on the mantle, allowing photo-ID registration. At Aer Bajo they emerge at dusk and can be tracked for extended periods as they hunt across the open sand, making the site one of the best in the world for observing octopus foraging behaviour.
