Atlantic Wolffish

Anarhichas lupus

Sighting evidence at Nusfjord, Lofoten Islands

The Atlantic wolffish is the apex benthic predator of these cold fjord walls, using its formidable crushing teeth to crack open sea urchins, mussels, and crabs with ease. It is remarkably site-faithful, returning to the same rock crevice or cave entrance season after season, making encounters highly predictable for divers who know where to look. Individuals grow to over a metre long and are often surprisingly tolerant of slow-moving divers who approach calmly.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
