Red King Crab

Paralithodes camtschaticus

Sighting evidence at Nusfjord, Lofoten Islands

Originally introduced to the Barents Sea during Soviet-era research programmes, red king crabs have marched steadily southward along the Norwegian coast and now populate the Lofoten fjords in great numbers. They are voracious omnivores that reshape benthic communities wherever they settle, but for divers they are a spectacular sight — adults can span over a metre leg-to-leg. Juveniles cluster in dense aggregations under kelp holdfasts while large adults prowl the open seabed at night.

Red King Crab is listed as a curated species here based on historical reports.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
