Red King Crab

Paralithodes camtschaticus

Sighting evidence at Agdenes Lighthouse Reef, Trondheim Fjord

Red king crabs with leg spans exceeding 1.5 m are a signature sighting at Agdenes, having expanded southward from Finnmark through Norwegian coastal waters over recent decades. They move in small groups across the gravel and boulder seabed, demolishing sea urchins, starfish, and benthic invertebrates with their heavy claws. Their ecological impact on native Norwegian marine communities is actively studied, making every sighting of scientific as well as recreational interest.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
