The national park status of Conception Island has allowed the Caribbean reef shark population to remain at natural densities, with 4-8 individuals routinely encountered on a single wall dive. They are apex predators whose presence structures the entire reef fish community below them, with prey species exhibiting natural fear responses that maintain reef grazing patterns. Scientists use reef shark density as a proxy for overall ecosystem integrity.

Caribbean reef shark is listed as a curated species here based on historical reports.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
