Bull sharks are the apex predator occasionally visiting Shark Reef, typically appearing during cooler winter months when water temperatures drop toward 22°C. They are the most dangerous shark species for divers due to their unpredictable temperament, impressive size (up to 3 metres and 300 kg), and tolerance of shallow inshore habitats. During organised feeds they are managed by experienced shark wranglers and the dives run in a structured format. Outside the feed site they patrol deeper water and encounters are typically brief.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
