Bull sharks use the deep ocean blue holes as transit corridors between the open Atlantic and the shallow Bahamian banks, tolerating the halocline layers as they ascend. Their presence in the blue holes is a reminder of how intimately the cave systems connect to the open ocean and how critical these structures are as shark habitat. Encounters are sporadic but well documented, and they lend an unmistakable edge to deeper blue hole dives.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
