Eastern Blue Groper

Achoerodus viridis

Sighting evidence at Coral Gardens, Lord Howe Island

The eastern blue groper is a large, brilliantly coloured wrasse whose striking cobalt-blue males are icons of Lord Howe Island's Coral Gardens. As sequential hermaphrodites they begin life as females before transforming to males, and their large size, curiosity toward divers, and habit of following snorkellers hoping for disturbed invertebrates make them one of Australia's most charismatic reef fish species.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
