Coral Gardens
Lord Howe Island · Australia
Coral Gardens lies within the southern end of Lord Howe Island's UNESCO-listed lagoon, sheltered by the world's southernmost true coral reef and home to a community of subtropical species living at the very edge of their thermal tolerances. Plate corals, brain corals, and staghorn formations grow in exceptionally clear, nutrient-rich water alongside temperate species like blue grouper and luderick that have no business being on a coral reef, creating an ecotone community found at very few places on Earth. The shallow depth and lagoon protection make it genuinely beginner-friendly while still offering enough endemic and unusual species to captivate the most well-travelled reef diver.
