Garibaldi Damselfish

Chromis hypsilepis

Sighting evidence at Coral Gardens, Lord Howe Island

The black-axil chromis is among the most abundant damselfish at Coral Gardens, forming dense mid-water aggregations above the coral formations that disperse instantly into the reef structure when threatened by passing pelagics. Their spawning aggregations in late spring create some of the lagoon's most spectacular fish-behaviour events, as males establish and vigorously defend nesting territories against rivals two to three times their size.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
