One of the most recognisable sea snakes, the banded sea krait is amphibious — it hunts fish and eels underwater but must return to land to digest, shed skin, and lay eggs. Lifou's limestone cliffs provide ideal nesting habitat. Despite carrying venom more potent than a cobra's, sea kraits are extremely docile toward divers. Endemic subspecies variants occur across the Loyalty Islands.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
