Leaf scorpionfish are masters of camouflage, rocking side-to-side to mimic drifting algae or leaf litter, and are found in a remarkable range of colours — white, yellow, pink, red, and brown — that match local coral and sponge hues. They are ambush predators, remaining motionless for hours before striking at small fish that venture within range. Found at Kontiki on coral heads and sponge surfaces between 8 and 22 m; their habit of shedding their outer skin layer means colouration can change between visits. A high-value macro find that rewards patient, observant divers.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
