Glassfish

Parambassis ranga / Ambassis spp.

Sighting evidence at Marigondon Cave, Mactan Island

Vast shoals of glassfish fill Marigondon Cave's interior, forming dense, transparent curtains that shift and pulse in the faint current. Their semi-transparent bodies and internal skeleton visible through the skin make them one of the most visually striking bait-fish assemblages in cave environments. The shoal functions as collective predator detection — the group responds to threat cues faster than any individual could. Their abundance supports resident predators including groupers and jacks that station themselves at the cavern entrance to intercept disoriented individuals. A spectacular macro and wide-angle photography subject.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
