Enormous schools of yellowfin barracuda form tornado-like formations above Planet Rock's summit, circling in tightly coordinated spirals that create one of the most spectacular schooling spectacles in PNG diving. Their schooling behavior serves primarily as predator confusion — the spiraling mass makes it nearly impossible for large predators to single out individuals — while also facilitating social interactions and potentially improving collective hunting efficiency on the baitfish swirling below.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
