King of the Sea Wreck
Madeira · Portugal
The King of the Sea is a deliberately sunk fishing trawler resting at 28 metres on a sand and rubble seabed off Madeira's south coast, its hold and engine room now colonised by dense shoals of glassfish and attended by a permanent community of large conger eels, Atlantic spadefish, and electric rays that have transformed the wreck into one of the island's most productive reef ecosystems in under two decades. Yellow sea fans drape the superstructure and moray eels occupy every pipe and cable run, while on the sand around the hull, common octopus hunt crabs at dusk and make the surrounding area a superb night dive. The combination of architectural interest, abundant fish life, and macro opportunities on the surrounding sand makes this Madeira's most complete single-dive experience.
