Mafia Island hosts one of East Africa's most consistent whale shark aggregations, with individuals returning to the bay year after year. The shallow protected waters allow extended surface snorkel and sub-surface encounters. Photo-ID research by the Marine Megafauna Foundation has tracked hundreds of individuals here.
