Grey reef sharks cruise the exterior of the Saratoga in small patrols, their torpedo-shaped bodies perfectly adapted for the open-water hunting of reef fish and squid that sustains them. They serve as a critical indicator species — their abundance at Bikini reflects decades of protection from fishing pressure and signals a functioning, top-down controlled ecosystem very rarely encountered elsewhere in the Pacific.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
