The giant moray is the largest moray eel species in the world, reaching 3 metres and 30 kilograms. It spends daylight hours coiled inside wreck cavities with only its head exposed, breathing continuously through an open mouth. At night it roams the reef to hunt fish and octopus. Despite a fearsome appearance, it is generally docile toward divers unless provoked or hand-fed.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
