Tiger sharks patrol the outer wall of Banc du Geyser year-round, drawn by the seabird colonies that nest on the emergent rocks and by green turtle populations nesting on the sandy cays. They are large — most individuals exceed 3 metres — and approach with measured confidence, circling slowly at distances of 5 to 10 metres before retreating to depth. The combination of isolation, prey abundance, and undisturbed habitat makes this one of the most genuine tiger shark hotspots in the Mozambique Channel.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
