One of the largest eels in the Mediterranean, the Mediterranean moray can exceed 1.5 metres and is an apex predator of crevice habitats. It hunts octopus and fish at night by scent rather than sight. The cave at Cala Morell provides ideal shelter, and resident individuals are often observed with their heads protruding from the same crack dive after dive.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
