Octopus vulgaris is a highly intelligent ambush predator and master of camouflage, able to match both the colour and texture of surrounding substrate within milliseconds. It forages primarily on crustaceans, molluscs, and small fish, often leaving distinctive piles of shells — known as a midden — at the entrance to its den. Menorca's clear, food-rich waters support resident populations across all depth zones of the wall.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
