A protogynous hermaphrodite — females can become dominant males — the dusky grouper is one of the defining large predators of Mediterranean reef habitat. It is highly territorial and frequently encountered resting on rocky outcrops along the wall. Once heavily overfished, populations are recovering slowly in areas with marine protection, and large males on the Ses Monges wall are a testament to Menorca's relative conservation status.

Dusky grouper is listed as a curated species here based on historical reports.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
