Resident bachelor groups of sperm whales use the deep offshore channel as a hunting ground for large squid, logging and socialising at the surface between deep dives. They are frequently sighted year-round and are occasionally curious enough to approach snorkellers drifting quietly in the blue water. Their clicks are clearly audible underwater, and encounters often last 20 to 30 minutes.

Sperm Whale is listed as a curated species here based on historical reports.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
