Hammerhead Channel
Mirissa · Sri Lanka
A deep offshore channel south of Mirissa where thermoclines and opposing currents create upwellings that attract scalloped hammerhead sharks in loose schools, particularly during the transition months of November and April. Depths push well past 30 metres and currents can be fierce, making this a site for experienced divers comfortable with open-water conditions and limited visibility at depth. The reward is one of the very few places in the Indian Ocean where schooling hammerheads can still be reliably encountered.
