Feather Star

Antedon mediterranea

Sighting evidence at Blue Cave, Budva, Montenegro

Mediterranean feather stars carpet the cave's mid-depth ledges, fanning their ten pinnate arms into the current to suspension-feed on phytoplankton and detritus. In the low-flow cave environment they remain permanently extended, creating an otherworldly floral effect against the blue-lit rock. Their arms can regenerate completely after predator attacks or disturbance, and individuals may live for over a decade in stable cave habitats.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
