Spiny lobsters shelter in the cave's deepest recesses and under overhangs throughout the day, emerging at dusk to forage across the rocky reef outside. They communicate with a stridulating rasp produced by rubbing antennae against the rostrum, an acoustic warning signal used when threatened. Montenegro's cave systems represent important refugia for this commercially exploited species, and populations inside marine protected waters are visibly more abundant than on exposed reefs.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
