Mamula Island's fortress walls and boulder fields shelter some of the largest dusky grouper in Montenegrin waters, individuals reaching 80 centimetres and weighing over 10 kilograms in the protected bays. These fish are protogynous hermaphrodites, all born female and the largest individuals transitioning to male, making trophy-sized fish ecologically important as breeding males. They are highly site-faithful, occupying the same cave or overhang for years and becoming familiar to regular diving guides.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
