Among the largest bony fish in the ocean, individuals exceeding 200 kg shelter in the cave systems and overhangs of Lima Rock's deeper walls. As apex predators they regulate mid-water fish populations, keeping reef communities structurally complex. Divers frequently encounter solitary animals resting motionless against the limestone, apparently unperturbed by close approach.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
