Giant morays up to 2.5 m occupy the deeper crevices and cave openings, occasionally accompanied by the smaller honeycomb moray sharing the same den — a cleaning-station dynamic where they queue for wrasse attention together. As ambush predators they anchor the reef's food web by controlling octopus and crustacean populations. Night dives reveal them actively hunting in the open, behavior rarely seen during daylight hours.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
