Thresher Shark

Alopias vulpinus

Sighting evidence at Ras Lima, Musandam Peninsula

The common thresher uses its elongated upper tail lobe to stun schooling fish in one of evolution's most remarkable hunting adaptations, and Ras Lima's fish-rich upwelling zones draw them in from the open ocean seasonally. Encounters typically occur in the 25 to 40 m range where cooler water masses meet the warmer surface layer. The Arabian Sea population is little studied and Musandam sightings contribute meaningful citizen-science data on their range and behavior.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
