Schools of scalloped hammerheads congregate at the seamount primarily from October through February, drawn by the nutrient upwelling that concentrates their cephalopod and fish prey. The distinctive cephalofoil head houses a vastly expanded electrosensory system that helps them detect prey buried in sediment — on seamounts they use this sense to navigate magnetic anomalies. Juveniles develop in nearshore nurseries while adults undertake deep oceanic migrations.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record.
