Common octopus are abundant throughout the reef, with large mature individuals occupying prime rocky dens in the 10 to 20 metre range. They are important predators of crustaceans and molluscs and themselves form part of the diet of moray eels and large grouper. Nesting behaviour can be observed from late spring through summer.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
