Apollonas Reef
Naxos · Greece
A rocky reef system in the northeastern corner of Naxos where nutrient-rich Aegean currents funnel past exposed pinnacles, drawing impressive schools of barracuda, dentex, and amberjack that circle in constant patrol. Dense banks of Mediterranean gorgonian sea fans cling to the deeper walls, and large octopus occupy every crevice below 15 metres. The shallower sections are carpeted in Posidonia oceanica meadows that shelter juvenile fish and provide critical nursery habitat for the broader reef community.
