Saddled Bream

Oblada melanura

Sighting evidence at Paros Channel, Naxos

Dense shoals of saddled bream cruise the water column throughout the channel, particularly active in morning hours when current flow is strongest. They feed on plankton and small invertebrates filtered from the nutrient-rich Aegean water and form a critical prey base for larger predators including barracuda and grouper. Their silver-blue flanks create striking visual curtains against the open blue water.
