Barramundi Cod

Cromileptes altivelis

Sighting evidence at Sitapur Wall, Neil Island (Andaman Islands)

Barramundi cod are distinctive spotted groupers that hunt along reef walls like Sitapur by stalking small reef fish with a slow, cautious approach before lunging with devastating speed. Their unusual high-backed body profile and densely spotted white skin makes them among the most ornate groupers in the Andaman Sea. As mesopredators they occupy an important trophic position between the reef fish community and the large apex sharks that patrol the wall's outer edge.
