Giant grouper at North Reef are among the largest found anywhere in Indian coastal waters, with individuals estimated at 150 to 200 kilograms occupying the same coral head territories across multiple dive seasons. As solitary ambush predators, they wait near large coral formations for prey — reef fish, octopus, and even juvenile sea turtles — and their sheer size commands the attention of every diver who encounters them. The species is classified as vulnerable by the IUCN, making Netrani's population of large individuals a genuinely significant conservation success for a site with no formal marine protected status.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
