Underwater at North Reef

North Reef

Netrani Island · India

North Reef wraps around the northern tip of Netrani Island in a gently sloping reef that plateaus at 15 metres before dropping to a sandy bottom at 28 metres — a more sheltered dive than the exposed pinnacle, making it the preferred site when northeast monsoon swell picks up. Large grouper occupy permanent territories among the coral heads, with honeycomb grouper and giant grouper both present in sizes that hint at decades without significant fishing pressure. The reef is notable for its moray eel diversity, with giant, undulated, and peppered moray all sharing the same coral substrate and regularly observed partially outside their holes during the day as water temperatures peak.
