Caribbean spiny lobsters shelter in every cavity of the City of New York's wreck structure, their long antennae visible projecting from the steel shadows. Unlike true lobsters they lack large claws, relying on their spiny carapace and nocturnal lifestyle for protection. Spiny lobsters play an important scavenging role on the wreck, recycling organic matter and making essential minerals available to the sponge and coral communities growing on the hull.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
