City of New York
North Carolina · United States
The City of New York was a Norwegian tanker torpedoed by U-160 in March 1942 while sailing without escort during the early desperate months of the Battle of the Atlantic. The wreck lies scattered across the sandy bottom in 24 to 30 metres, her collapsed hull sections hosting a thriving ecosystem of tube sponges, encrusting corals, and schooling fish. The flat, broken nature of the wreck creates ideal habitat for large loggerhead sea turtles, which are regularly spotted resting on the structure or cruising the sandy surrounding seabed.
