Sand tiger sharks visit USS Tarpon primarily from late spring through autumn, sometimes resting in the open water just above the wreck in classic aggregation behaviour. This site forms part of a broader network of North Carolina wrecks that function as critical habitat for sand tigers during their southward migration. Juveniles and sub-adults predominate in summer, while larger individuals appear more frequently in autumn.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
