Jewel Anemone

Corynactis viridis

Sighting evidence at Garvellachs Islands, Oban

Jewel anemones form dense carpets across the shadier faces of the Garvellachs' rock walls, their translucent bodies tipped with club-shaped tentacles in electric pink, purple, orange, and white. These colonial animals are not true anemones but corallimorpharians, reproducing asexually to create genetically identical clonal patches that can cover several square metres. The density of jewel anemone coverage on Scottish west coast walls is globally significant.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
