Large cod are a defining presence in the Sound of Mull, where reduced fishing pressure has allowed populations to recover to sizes rarely seen in more accessible Scottish waters. Individuals exceeding 60 cm regularly approach divers, seemingly habituated to bubble-blowing visitors over popular dive moorings. Their role as apex predators in the sound keeps populations of sandeels, sprats, and invertebrates in dynamic balance.

Atlantic Cod is listed as a curated species here based on historical reports.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
