The oceanic whitetip is one of the ocean's most historically significant apex predators and among the most challenging to encounter reliably, making Osprey Reef exceptional — it is one of only a handful of sites in the Pacific where these animals appear with genuine consistency. Their distinctive oversized, rounded pectoral fins tipped with white are unmistakeable as they cruise in from the blue in long, slow arcs assessing the dive group. IUCN-listed as critically endangered, each sighting here carries real ecological significance and underscores the importance of remote, protected sites like the Coral Sea.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
